All CategoriesArchaeology, History & History of Art

Course synopsis

Many different civilizations have arisen in Peru. Along the southern coast were the Paracas and the Nazca, famed for their mysterious geo-glyphs  on the desert floor. Further north the Moche and the Chimu  flourished, until the latter was conquered by the emerging Inca Empire from the High Andes. Then from the late 1520's Spanish ships were seen along the coast, and Francisco Pizarro and his brothers led a brutal campaign to take over the Inca lands and plunder their treasures. We will tell the full story of that 50 year campaign down to the demise of the last Inca Emperor. Finally we will explore the famous World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu to discover the technical abilities of the people of the Andes.
