Course synopsis

In a relaxed setting, the aim of this mixed-ability course is to enable less-experienced students to develop a basic skill-set, whereas those class members at an intermediate level have an opportunity to immerse themselves in self-initiated projects to create a small collection of two- and three-dimensional textile pieces. With encouragement and guidance from the tutor, and peer support, it is hoped that beginner students will, in time, progress to a higher level of study within the group.

Each class is of a three-hour duration, allowing sufficient time for tutor demonstrations, videos to explain technical processes, q & a and supervised practical sessions at the students’ own pace.

The classroom is upstairs [no lift] and equipped with a large TV screen for visual presentations, has table and chairs for sitting to complete practical work, a corridor linking to a sink area and a cupboard with a selection of fabrics, threads, fibres, paints, dyes, books, magazines and a small selection of sewing machines alongside an embellishing machine. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing /embellishing machine, where possible. NOTE: cash donations are encouraged for the purchase of specialist materials for the class.

Finally, in addition, to the traditional classroom environment, digital learning resources are also available to students. Upon enrolment your tutor will give you instructions on how to log-in to Google Classroom where you have 24/7 access to Topics on a range of textile-related subjects to support your learning. The digital classroom also has a video call feature known as Google Meet for the class to take place remotely should the need arise.
