Film History Iranian New Wave Cinema

Course synopsis

These five sessions
will look at Iran’s New Wave cinema which was inspired by post-war Italian
neorealism. In each session we will view the whole of a major “new wave”
film.  These will be different from the
ones we have seen in recent years of “Film History”.  The course will examine the tense
relationship between filmmakers and Iran’s governments since the Iranian
Revolution of 1979, considering some of the ways in which cinema responded to
societal crises and events in neighbouring Afghanistan.  In terms of the films and filmmakers, we will
focus on the film makers working from the 1980s to 2010s, often dubbed the
Iranian “new wave”.  Their films astounded
audiences at major film festivals for over two decades.  Directors include Abbas Kiarostami, the
Makhmalbaf family, Jafar Panahi
and Asghar Farhadi.
