Course synopsis
Manchester's industry and urbanisation during the late 18th and first half of the 19th century made it not just a place of innovation and growth, but a city that pioneered a new way of industrial living - the Shock City of the early Victorian period as some commentators called it. This course looks at the industrial heritage and archaeology of this city of innovation and industry. The focus is one the surviving remains within Manchester and its regional hinterland of industry (textiles, engineering, warehousing), recent excavations of manufacturing sites and workers' housing, and some of the problems in managing the new industrial city and its legacy (policing, water supply, mill fires).
