Drawing A Still Life With Continuous Line Drawing From Observation

All Events

Information

When making a continuous line drawing our pencil keeps the contact with the paper whilst we draw and observe, slowly scribbling lines on the paper that correspond to the journey that our eyes undertake when gliding over the observed objects.

Such a way of drawing relies on allowing our eyes, and the line-making action of the pencil to stay in sync, slowly letting a drawing emerge without the pressure to get the proportions right or achieve a likeness. The line work on the paper – as it emerges -  is often convincing because it shows a uniqueness due to the particular journeying routes of the drawing person’s eyes. Such uniqueness is often totally unintentional …it happens anyway! A continuous line drawing is a perfect introduction to drawing if you have never done it before and it is every seasoned draftsperson’s method of choice when aiming to draw in a relaxed way, or to get an overview of a large seen scenario as a first step before embarking on my detailed studies.

Be prepared to be asked to try a drawing with the left hand… (you don’t have to comply….!)
