In 1894 French army officer Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason for selling military secrets to the Germans. Despite evidence that he was innocent, he remained in prison, many felt because of antisemitism. As controversy raged, novelist Emile Zola published a letter in the newspaper L’Aurore attacking the army for covering up its wrongful conviction. Would Dreyfus be exonerated? And what would be the consequences for Zola of challenging the powerful Establishment?
