Life Drawing Half Day Friday 6 November

Information

Life drawing is one of the most fascinating pursuits in art and design—a superb starting point if you are just beginning your artistic journey, and an endlessly rich theme for more experienced artists at all levels.

In everyday life, we are naturally tuned into observing and interpreting the human body and its movements. Experiencing life in our own physical bodies gives us a deep reservoir of intuitive, embodied knowledge to bring to the easel. Stripped of surface distractions like buttonholes, textile patterns, shoelaces, and heavy garment silhouettes, the nude invites us to focus purely on form and how it transforms through various poses. It is a beautifully simple and elegant concept.

This half-day Friday session (2:00pm – 4:30pm) offers a relaxed, friendly space to explore life drawing without the commitment of a long continuous course.

Sabine supports each learner individually—providing as much or as little guidance as you wish—alongside plenty of demonstrations exploring different drawing processes. Beginners are very welcome, and learners are encouraged to think ahead about any specific techniques or mediums they might like to try. The class atmosphere is open and collaborative, with opportunities throughout the session to step back, view others' work, and share insights on your unfolding creative journeys.

What to bring:

One or two soft graphite pencils (4B or softer) and a sharpener

A colour medium of your choice, if desired—such as watercolors or acrylics (a simple palette of primary colors—red, yellow, blue—plus black and white is plenty; watercolor paper is only needed if you plan to use heavy layering techniques)

Inexpensive tape to secure your paper to the board

Inexpensive A2 cartridge paper (130g, 18p/sheet) is available to purchase in class. Learners will work on tables using drawing boards and trestles (please note that the Guild does not supply easels, but you are welcome to bring your own standing equipment, papers, and preferred materials).

Sabine also teaches full-day life drawing workshops at the Guild (bookable under the ‘Events’ section of the website), as well as ongoing 12-week courses on Monday evenings and Thursday afternoons.
