Information
This is the final part of the trilogy of novels by Hilary Mantel's about the life and career of Thomas Cromwell at the court of Henry VIII.
It covers the years from 1536 to 1540 which were turbulent both for the king and his first minister
After Anne Boleyn's execution Henry had quickly married Jane Seymour, who gave him the son he longed for but died soon afterwards
Henry's court was still riddled with progressive and conservative factions, which Cromwell had so far navigated with aplomb.
But the search for a fourth wife would end disastrously. Henry took against Anne of Cleves and Cromwell was blamed as the chief architect of this foreign marriage.
His opponents scented weakness and like circling sharks moved in for the kill.
Michael will discuss the events and personalities that feature in the narrative to explain the political, religious and international setting in which the historical Cromwell lived.
Creina will explore the literary work to see how Mantel presents her portrait of the man, drawn in a surprisingly sympathetic light.
