Urban Sketching In Macclesfield

All Events

Information

For this session, we will congregate in the Snowgoose, Macclesfield (52 Sunderland St, Macclesfield SK11 6HN) and then venture out to find quiet areas to draw buildings, roads, and details of the urban environment as we see and observe it. We will be standing, holding a solid-backed sketch pad or book or paper clipped to a drawing board. We might also sit on walls where appropriate. We will journey around together, but, can also venture out individually if wanted.

Whilst making short breaks, we’ll look at our pictures and discuss them, then carry on. Considering that we will be moving around, and just standing for maybe 10 minutes at a time, please bring as little bags as possible (consider a back-pack!)  so that you do not have to carry a lot of things with you. We’ll use continuous line drawing or a sketching method to make our drawings and Sabine will give demonstrations of both methods and also show and explain how to keep your drawing process organised when it seems that the choice of visual information is a bit overwhelming and we might not know where to start.

In case that the weather is really bad and we decide that being outdoors is just not possible, then we will start drawing in the Snowgoose, and then progress towards other indoor locations that we find suitable – e.g. the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, St. Michael’s Church, the Town Hall.

The Snowgoose, our starting point for this session, is a three minute walk along Sunderland Street, just further down and easily accessible from the train station. There is a car park just opposite the Snowgoose and further parking is found in the vicinity.  Toilets can be accessed in the Snowgoose, the train station, but also in many other cafés and bars (e.g. Red Willow, The Queens Hotel) along Sunderland Street.

Learners will need to bring:

A4 paper for sketching or sketchbook/pad

hard backing board (does not have to be a ‘proper’ drawing board’) for putting drawing paper on if not using a sketch book or pad

pencils – HB and 4B. fine liner – e.g. 0.5 or a ball point pen
