Course synopsis
This course will look closely at developments in art in Europe, concentrating on painting, beginning in 1800. French art and Paris is particularly dominant, with events during the revolution, and then the emergence of Realism and Romanticism, leading eventually to the birth of Impressionism in the 1860s. We will also look at British art of the period, with the emergence of Constable, Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites amongst the most important to appear. We then look at how the Impressionist painters in France and elsewhere changed art , and led to Modernism and brilliant individuals such as Degas, van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec.
