Information
We will explore how to construct a four-legged animal with a hollow body using crank clay. While Paul typically demonstrates his method by creating a horse, the techniques taught are applicable to any four-legged creature.
The emphasis of the day will be on learning new ways of handling clay together as a group within a light-hearted, supportive atmosphere.
Throughout the session, we will be using Paul’s Sculptures Framework. Developed in 2008 and used extensively since, this is an external armature comprising a system of rods designed to support the clay until it can take its own weight.
Note: The frameworks will be available for purchase at the end of the day. If we run out of stock due to popularity, you can place an order for later delivery.
No previous experience with sculpture is necessary. Paul’s simple approach to clay modelling is perfectly suited for absolute beginners, yet offers fresh perspectives for experienced studio ceramicists looking to expand their technique.
Paul creates hand-built ceramic figurative sculptures centered on animal themes, inspired by both a love of nature and art history. His signature style is bold and semi-abstract, characterized by graceful sweeping curves and simplified details.
